India further delays retaliatory tariffs on US products: official
Trade friction between India and the US has escalated after US President Donald Trump announced plans earlier this year to end preferential trade treatment for India that allows duty-free entry for up to USD 5.6 billion worth of its exports to the United States. In a further blow, US on Monday demanded buyers of Iranian oil stop purchases by May or face sanctions, ending six months of waivers which allowed Iran's eight biggest buyers including India to continue importing limited volumes. ... The big baddies of the comic world
He was reportedly inspired by Malcolm McDowell's mannerisms in A Clockwork Orange (1971), the Stanley Kubrick-directed masterpiece. The Joker's quirky character and crimes are based on the concept of fun, even though that fun may be sinister and dark. The Joker is intelligent, diabolical and sadistic and even when he gets caught and imprisoned, he remains calm, knowing he has the upper hand. Magneto "They wish to cure us. But I say to you we are the cure! The cure for that infirm, imperfect condition called "Homo sapiens!" They have their weapons. we have ours. We will strike with a vengeance and a fury that this world has never witnessed. And if any mutants stand in our way, we will use this poison against them!"Best portrayal: Ian McKellen, X-Men seriesSuperpowers: The ability to generate and control magnetic fieldsMagneto's character, like many others in the superhero world, is not etched out in black and white. His actions are dictated by the suffering he experienced as an adolescent during the Holocaust at Auschwit. It would be wrong to call Magneto insane, in the sense of not being criminally responsible. Films have tried to portray Magneto as a man who believes that direct action will save his people from annihilation, a sort of dark counterpart to Xavier (played by Patrick Stewart) who believes good examples and dialogue will save mutants. He regards mutants as superior to humans in terms of evolution and is against the idea of peaceful human-mutant co-existence. Loki"I ask only one thing in return, a good seat from which to watch Asgard burn".Best portrayal: Tom Hiddleston, Thor (2011), The Avengers (2012), Thor: The Dark World (2013), Thor: Ragnarok (2017), Avengers: Infinity War (2018)Superpowers: Magic, energy projection and creation of force fields - Loki can do it all. To many, he is morally grey at best. Loki is a complex character but that doesn't necessarily make him a dangerous enemy. Within the MCU, he is looked at as a troubled but charismatic personality who is capable of deception. Loki's motivations, while extreme, are nuanced and complicated. There has never been anyone quite in the same league as this supervillain. He is human, with complex motives and methods that are evil, immoral, and unethical, but still understandable. They are the most hated people. We love to see them getting bashed up, but they have clearly evolved. From being the stereotypical bad guys, they are now giving their superhero nemeses a run for their money. With plots being tweaked around them, some supervillains now have a cult following, rubbing shoulders with superheroes in terms of sheer popularity. t2 lists some iconic supervillains that power some of the biggest superhero franchises.Bane "Ah, you think darkness is your ally. But you merely adopted the dark; I was born in it, moulded by it. I didn't see the light until I was already a man, by then it was nothing to me but BLINDING! The shadows betray you, because they belong to me! I will show you where I have made my home while preparing to bring justice. Then I will break you".Best portrayal: Tom Hardy, The Dark Knight Rises (2012)Superpowers: He uses the super-steroid known as Venom to enhance his physical attributes to superhuman levels. Bane is smart enough to rival Batman. He had to learn to fight to survive, scoring his first kill at the age of 12. Bane is a driven and intelligent yet logical villain, who challenges Batman as well as tests him. He is a tricky character and though he's a genius, he's often presented as a brute. Even The Dark Knight Rises doesn't quite get Bane right, but it comes close in what is clearly director Nolan's take. Bane is the only Batman villain to ever defeat the caped crusader and is, in almost every way, a perfect foil to Batman. Thanos"Going to bed hungry, scrounging for scraps. Your planet was on the brink of collapse. I was the one who stopped that. You know what's happened since then? The children born have known nothing but full bellies and clear skies. It's a paradise".Best portrayal: Josh Brolin, Avengers: Infinity War (2018)Superpowers: Can project cosmic energy, is capable of telekinesis and telepathy. According to directors Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers: Infinity War belongs to Thanos. We couldn't agree more. Josh Brolin played the character to perfection, and in the process, immortalised the villain forever. Very few characters achieve iconic status riding on a single film, but Thanos did it in the "snap of a finger".His greatness lies in the fact that he strikes a chord with many of us. He thinks he is right, but he isn't. He dreams of a universe without suffering but goes to the extent of wiping out half the population (officially the highest body count for any villain, ever). A burgeoning population could put any planet/universe on the brink of extinction, but he chooses to go the wrong way for a right cause. His tragic flaw? Thanos tries to be God. KKR survive Hardik's hammering, win game
target of 233 was always going to be difficult. Mumbai Indians never looked to be in the chase once they lost Quinton de Kock and Rohit Sharma within the first four overs. Kieron Pollard and the Pandya brothers did provide some entertainment but never posed enough threat .While Hardik and Pollard added 63 off 30 balls for the fifth wickets, the Pandya brothers put on 64 off 28 balls.Hardik was simply brilliant during his 91 off 34 balls. Two MS Dhoni-like helicopter shots which yielded over boundaries stood out among his nine sixes. He seemed bothered by cramps towards the end of his innings, but that hardly hampered his run-making process.Andre Russell had sent out a warning to Mumbai Indians and it proved to be prophetic. His majestic 80 not out off 40 balls was followed by two for 25 off four overs. The innings simply sealed the visitors' fate. Going into the match, Karthik's men knew well that they were surviving by a thin thread of hope. Chris Lynn and Shubman Gill began with a flourish after being put into bat, bringing up their 50 runs in the first six overs.Gill was quick off the blocks, taking two consecutive boundaries of the first over by Barinder Sran. Then when the left-arm pacer dropped short, he turned it over deep square leg for a six. The momentum had been set and the openers didn't wish to look back.Lynn joined the party with two boundaries off Krunal Pandya's second over. He was dropped on 18 and made the most of the reprieve. He raced to his half-century off 27 balls which included seven boundaries and two sixes.Lynn's good fortune, however, ended when he sliced Chahar over mid-wicket only to be caught in the deep. The opening pair had stitched together 96 off 57 balls.Enter Andre Russell, the man who had questioned the team management's decision-making process. Promoted to No.3, he showed that he could have changed their fortunes in their last six games had he come a little earlier in the batting order. But Shubman surely stole the thunder from him for a while. Relying mainly on cricketing shots, the youngster once again proved why he is regarded so highly in cricketing circles. Two clean sixes off Chahar will always stand out in memory, an example of the exquisite timing that is the hallmark of his batting. There was the odd whip behind the wicketkeeper but Shubman mainly relied on shots in the 'V', during his 76 off 45 balls. The second wicket partnership yielded 62 off 25 balls.Once Shubman departed, the stage was set for Russell to launch into an overdrive and he didn't disappoint. Besides the enormous power that he wields, there was also the positive intent in his batting that singes the opposition.Russell was unflustered after surviving early in the innings and broke into a flurry of eight sixes and six boundaries and made the Mumbai Indians pay dearly. Such was Russell's control that the home team added 75 runs off the last five overs.Karthik was a mere spectator and was content with giving much of the strike to Russell. After hitting Hardik for three sixes in the 18th over, he turned his attention to Lasith Malinga in the final over. Two boundaries and two sixes contributed to the Knight Riders recording the season's highest total. Obese people with active commute could cut risk of early death
Their analysis includes 163,149 UK Biobank participants who have been followed up for a mean of 5 years. The age range was 37 to 73 years and 50.8% were women. Obesity was defined as a body mass index (BMI) (kg/m2) of greater than 30. Active commuting to and from work was self-reported and people classified in one of the following groups: car commuters, walking and cycling (active-mixed), cycling-only and walking-only. Dr Carlos Celis, the lead investigator of the study, said that during the follow-up, a total of 2,425 participants died and 7,973 developed heart disease. In Comparison to people with healthy body weight and mixed active commutation (walking and cycling to and from work; reference group), obese people who commuted by car were associated with a 32% higher risk for premature death, a doubling of risk of heart disease mortality and a 59% increase in risk non-fatal heart diseases. People with obesity who reported being active commuters had a risk of death from any cause that was similar to normal weight active commuters, suggesting that cycling or walking to and from work could reduce the detrimental effect of obesity. However, the risk of heart disease was still increased by 82% in active commuters with obesity compared with normal weight active commuters. The authors concluded, 'Our findings, if causal, suggest that people with overweight or obesity could potentially decrease the risk of premature mortality if they engage in active commuting.' They added, 'Regardless of your body weight, being physically active could partly reduce the excess risk associated with obesity. However, compared to other forms of physical activity - such as gyms and exercises classes - active commuting can be implemented and fitted within our daily routines, often with no additional cost, but at the same time could increase our overall physical activity levels and therefore help to meet the current physical activity recommendations for health.' Five-year summer
Perhaps this is the reason why every five years when it's time for an election, one gets to see the confluence of film stars and political parties. The power of film as a medium can be gauged by what someone like Vladimir Lenin thought of it. One of the architects of the Russian Revolution, Lenin, according to the Bolshevik government's first Commissar for Education, Anatoly Lunacharsky, is believed to have remarked: 'Film for us is the most important of the arts'. The observation becomes particularly significant as at the time films were considered to be merely a form of cheap entertainment. In the early years of independent India, the troika of Dev Anand-Dilip Kumar-Raj Kapoor possibly did more to popularise the brand of Nehruvian socialism than anything else. How the three Hindi film stars embodied aspects of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru's persona in their onscreen characters and reflected his ideas in their films, especially Raj Kapoor and a few Dilip Kumar films such as Naya Daur (1957) and Leader (1964), remains unmatched. Similarly, Manoj Kumar in Upkaar (1967) encapsulated the spirit of India's second Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri for posterity. Although many of these instances might have been a result of being inspired by the leader of the day, there is enough to believe in the influence both the medium and its prized element (read actor) wields. Is this the rationale for Uri: The Surgical Strike (2019) or The Accidental Prime Minister (2019) being singled out by certain quarters even though they merely depict real events? It began with Nehru nominating Prithviraj Kapoor to the Rajya Sabha in 1952, and over the years actors were used by powers-that-be to project a particular image. When Indira Gandhi nominated Habib Tanvir to the Rajya Sabha in 1972, it was seen as a return of favour for the stage legend campaigning for the Congress in the 1971 elections. He had written a play called Indira Loksabha and much to the dismay of the Communist Party of India, Tanvir refused to resign when the Emergency was declared. When Gandhi later nominated Nargis Dutt to the Upper House of the Parliament, the legendary actress echoed the PM's famous 'Garibi Hatao' slogan by chastising the iconic Satyajit Ray for showcasing India's poverty to the world. An Amitabh Bachchan or Govinda unleashed by the Congress to thwart opposing political stalwarts such as Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna in Allahabad, 1984, and Ram Naik in Mumbai North, 2004, respectively confirms how easily a star swayed the voter. Or at least, could up until just a few years ago. It's not the same anymore. A film star might still hold some fascination, but it's more on the lines of what Edna St. Vincent Millay mused: 'I know I am but summer to your heart, and not the full four seasons of the year'. The seasons have changed, for today even a Kamal Haasan seems to be pensive before taking the 'electoral' plunge. gautam@chintamani.org Gautam Chintamani Film historian and bestselling author DailyhuntDisclaimer: This story is auto-aggregated by a computer program and has not been created or edited by Dailyhunt. Drama unfold as man says Warring bribed him to join Congress; SAD, PEP rush to EC
The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) was quick to act and filed a complaint with the Election Commission (EC) asking it to file a case against Warring and cancel his nomination for trying to bribe voters. SAD leader and Union minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal is seeking a re-election from Bathinda for a third consecutive term. Warring visited the residence of Tinku Madaan, who had worked for the Aam Aadmi Party in 2017, Friday night. Mansa district Congress president Anju Bala, party in-charge for Budhlada Ranjit Kaur Bhatti and several Congress workers were also present. In the video, Warring can be seen sitting with Tinku at latter's house after presented him Congress robe. Soon, Tinku is seen asking people to vacate the room as he wants to talk something in private with Warring. Warring too is seen telling workers to go out. The video show Warring and Tinku emerging a few minutes later. 'He (Tinku) wants industries to be set up in Budhalada and I have assured him of the same. It will provide employment to people,' Warring is heard saying. The video shows Tinku thanking Warring and fishing out a bundle of notes from his pocket saying, 'I cannot keep it, take it along with you'. Soon after the incident, Warring left the place. Tinku later said, 'I never asked for any money. They forcibly gave me Rs 50,000. This has hurt me. Bhagat Singh's descendents cannot be bribed. Bhatti gave me this money while Manju Bala said that this is a gift from Captain Saheb (Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh). Warring also supported them'. Warring, however, denied the allegation. 'I had gone to Budhalada to open party's office. Workers took me to one Tinku's house whom I had never met before. I was told that he wants to join our party. He insisted on talking in private and urged me to get industries to Budhlada. Six to seven people were present in theb house when this conversation took place. After we came out of the room, he, all of a sudden took out some money and started raising allegations. I was shocked. I will file a complaint with the election commission,' Warring said. SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal demanded that election commission must cancel warring's nomination. A delegation led by party senior vice-president Daljit Singh Cheema submitted a formal representation to Punjab chief electoral officer Dr S Karuna Raju in this regard along with 'video evidence'. It demanded Warring's 'immediate arrest' and 'cancellation of his nomination from Bathinda' for May 19 polls. The SAD said that Warring had 'not only violated the model code of conduct but also indulged in corrupt practices as per Section 123 of the Representation of People's Act, 1950 and Representation of People's Act, 1951'. The SAD also demanded registration of an FIR against Congress leaders Mangat Rai Bansal, Manju Bala and Ranjit Kaur Bhatti, who accompanied Warring to Tinku's residence Punjab Ekta Party chief Sukhpal Singh Khaira, who is also in the fray from Bathinda as Punjab Democratic Alliance candidate, met Tinku at his residence demanded action against Warring. He also wrote to the Election Commission of India with a similar demand. DailyhuntDisclaimer: This story is auto-aggregated by a computer program and has not been created or edited by Dailyhunt. KKR vs RR, IPL 2019: Dinesh Karthik has his say on what's going wrong for Kolkata
But sometimes the results don't go your way. So it's obviously always a tough thing to mend. But the fact is that we try hard as a team and I have belief in my boys that we'll come stronger,' he said. With another loss, KKR's hopes of making the play-offs are all but over. 'It is very difficult. I am not going to sit here and say 'it's okay and stuff'... It's very disappointing. We tried hard but we were just not able to cross the line.' Following their nine-wicket defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad which was their fifth defeat in a row, Karthik was given a 'break' as the skipper was not seen with the team on the eve of the match, raising speculation about his captaincy. 'Obviously when the results don't go your way these questions will be asked, and I understand that. But as a team, we're trying to do a lot of things right.' 'There're no things that we're not attending to. We're trying to make the right changes, build the right combination and trying to come in every game believing that we can win. We're trying to keep everybody in good space and making sure the dressing room is good and they all trust in the leader.' Spin duo of Sunil Narine and Piyush Chawla shared five wickets among them and removed the three key batsmen -- Ajinkya Rahane, Steve Smith and Ben Stokes. But the pacers let the team down with Parag and Archer sealing the chase with 44-run stand for the seventh wicket. 'I think bowling overall has been found wanting a little bit definitely. I think batting as well... That's why we are not been able to close games. That's something we need to look into definitely,' Karthik added. The horror show begins
Naturally, your heart rate goes through the roof, as they bark questions at you and go through your luggage while an over-enthusiastic-type records the proceedings. The dutiful minion of the law double-checks your toilet kit which may or not contain a purloined item or two from the last fancy hotel you stayed at, while a tidal wave of terror overwhelms you as you envision yourself growing old, locked up in a dank cell reeking of urine and filled with excreta (like in Sanju), awaiting your day in court, even as the judges take a half-hearted stab at clearing the backlog of cases which is expected to take a few centuries at the very least. As the tension ratchets to unbearable levels, the cop with one last grunt to register his displeasure since you refuse to make eye-contact, allows you to leave. Once your breathing has returned to normal, you wonder where are these fellows the rest of the time when there are young girls being abducted/raped/killed, when guilty diamond merchants are buying a first class ticket to Heathrow, when mobs lynch citizens for eating beef? Having barely recovered from your scary encounter with the desi Mark Fuhrman, you decide to hit the spa and pamper yourself only to find that all routes to your destination are blocked because an earnest politician is on the campaign trail, a nightmarish cavalcade of vehicles driven by goons with definite road rage issues in tow. Citizens have been bussed in from all over with the promise of mutton biryani, booze and hard cash so that they can listen to uninspired speeches that promise jobs and justice for everybody while taking in the eye-popping ugliness that are the life-sized cut-outs of crooks, complete with their creatively embellished achievements on flimsily erected hoardings that seem in danger of toppling over unwary two-wheeler riders who don't wear helmets since it messes with their gelled hair. While waiting for the traffic to clear, you whip out your smartphone to check out IPL-related matters when the news apps take it on themselves to provide in-depth analysis by eager beavers about the upcoming elections hoping to convince you about the soundness of their preferred candidate, though we all know that like in the past, we will simply have to choose between the devil and the deep blue sea. Worst of all, the horror show with its relentless, arduous and dedicated fusillade of all things grotesque and nasty has only just begun. What to do? You sigh in resignation, dig your nails into your palms, crawl homeward and scream into a pillow. Turnaround is possible, insists Kallis
Hopefully, we can repeat that again this year," Kallis said during a media conference on Tuesday.Though frustrating, Kallis said there were no negative vibes in the team."I think the guys are frustrated," Kallis said. "I wouldn't say negative vibes but they do realise that we still have a chance of qualifying and we've just got to play some good cricket. In this format, there are little percentages that you need to improve in order to turn these things around and we're not far off. Just little things that we need to do a little bit better."Kallis accepted that the bowling has let them down this season."I think the frustrating part for us this season has been not taking wickets. If you don't take wickets upfront, you are under pressure for the whole innings. I think we have probably taken 20-21 wickets in 10 games that we have played which has put us under a lot pressure. "And yes, your bowling unit will be under pressure. You can't be as attacking... The key for us will be to take a few more wickets upfront and making life a little bit easier in the middle overs."The head coach said the Knight Riders need to win those key moments. "We haven't played as well as we would have liked during those key moments. In every game, you need to recognise the key moments and put your foot on the pedal. We probably have been off that... Have not found the little things that need to go our way. We need to improve on that in the next four games, and hopefully, we can get it right and turn it around," Kallis said.Kallis felt sending in Andre Russell early in the batting order was an option that could be considered."Rinku (Singh) went in, in the eighth over in the last match and we certainly haven't sent Andre in that early. They got a partnership going... In hindsight, maybe we could have sent him a bit earlier. But it certainly hadn't been one of our plans. But if a situation arises, then it's something that we will think of," he said.On Dinesh Karthik's captaincy, Kallis said: "We haven't discussed it, nor has it been brought up. So, there has been no talk about that." Kallis hoped Karthik will come up with significant contributions in the remaining matches. "Hopefully, he can get in and get us some big runs. That will certainly mean a lot to the team," Kallis said of the Knight Riders captain, who averages 16.71 from nine innings so far in this edition. "I think DK went home for a day. So we will catch up on Wednesday and plan going forward again for the next game."In the last game, he came up in the batting order but unfortunately got run out. It's about matching up players and situations. DK is vital for us and a world-class player."We all want to perform a little bit better. Yeah, I think everyone's in that space where we just want to get up and play better cricket and get back to winning ways. Losing certainly isn't fun."Some of the players had flown to Mumbai after the match versus Sunrisers Hyderabad, and will be joining the rest of the squad on Wednesday. "We felt the guys needed a break. They have been given the freedom to do what they want to for the next couple of days," Kallis said. Denied money to buy liquor, man kills mom, brother with knives, scissors, bat
The two brothers were divorcees and lived off their mother's money. Their father had died years ago. 'Lata had sold a house some years ago and the family was living off the interest earned from that money. Arora suspected his mother of giving a larger share of the money to Rajendra,' Anto Alphonse, deputy commissioner of police (Dwarka), said. According to Naresh Singh, a local who witnessed the murder, the family often quarrelled in public over the money. On Tuesday night, the DCP said, the fight began when Lata refused to give Arora money to buy alcohol. It was Singh who first alerted about the attack around 8.30pm. 'Rajendra came running out of his building. He was injured and bleeding. He told us his brother had attacked him and their mother and begged us to help,' said Singh. 'When other residents and I confronted Sunil outside his house, he was armed with a knife. We tried to intervene, but he said it was his family affair and that he would attack us if we intervened. We were frightened,' Singh said. Arora then allegedly stabbed Rajendra again before dragging him upstairs to their house on the first floor. One of the neighbours called the police control room, but Singh just then happened to notice two policemen passing by. Accompanied by the policemen, the neighbours marched into the flat. 'Rajendra had collapsed on a chair with multiple stab injuries and other wounds. His mother was lying bleeding on the floor. Sunil was sitting next to their bodies and calmly smoking a beedi,' Singh said. Arora was overpowered by the policemen even as the injured mother and son were rushed to a hospital. Rajendra was declared dead on arrival while his mother died within minutes of being admitted there. A senior investigator said two knives, a pair of bent scissors and a laundry bat were used in the double murder. 'When one of the knives bent during the attack, Arora brought another knife from the kitchen to carry on with the assault. Even the pair of scissors was bent with the intensity of the attack,' the officer said. Man on death row breaks out of high-security Hindalga jail
Murugesh alias Kannamucchi (51), a resident of Salem, Tamil Nadu, was awarded death penalty for hacking five people to death in Chamarajanagar in 2017. Speaking to TNIE, a prison official said he managed to climb the jail walls and jumped out during the night. He meticulously planned his escape. As most of the Home Guards posted in the prison were drawn for election duty, Murugan took advantage of the situation. After climbing the wall with the help of a rope, he spread a thick blanket on the top of the wall to avoid getting hurt by the sharp-edge iron rods. He then used the same ropes and iron rods to climb down to the other side. He is believed to have planned his escape with the help of some other inmates, but jail officials wouldn't say anything.Jail Superintendent T Shesha did not respond to phone calls when contacted by TNIE on Thursday evening. A case has been registered by Belagavi police. A case had been filed against Murugan at Kollegal Rural police station on charges of killing five including an eight-year-old girl at a farm house at Harale village of Kollegal on May 11, 2015. After trial, the Chamarajanagar District Session Court sentenced him to death. He was lodged in the Chamarajanagar central prison between May 13, 2015 and July 23, 2017. The Department of Prisons shifted him to Hindalga prison in Belagavi in July 2017. Hindalga is one of the few prisons in the country where hanging of death convicts is carried out. Third case of prison break at Hindalga prison Murugesh's escape is said to be the third case of prison break at the historic Hindalga prison. The last incident occurred on August 28, 2010 and prior to that in 1974. With several criminals facing capital punishment, the jail presently has more than 800 prisoners. On August 28, 2010, undertrial Walli Ahmed, a notorious thief from Belagavi city, had managed to squeeze out of the toilet window of a barrack and later used a thick bamboo stalk to scale the prison wall and slithered out. Sources said a gang of four dacoits had escaped from the prison in the same fashion in 1974. The four notorious dacoits were brought to Hindalga from Dharwad jail after they were sentenced to seven years rigorous imprisonment. It took 15 days for the four to plan their escape. They used to cut the thick rod of their barrack window inch by inch every day and had managed to break it on the fifteenth day. Then, they cut the long pipeline connected to a drainage inside the prison and used it to climb the wall and jump out. After the incident, the jail authorities had initiated several measures to prevent such incidents. They have installed security cameras inside the prison to keep track of every inmate. It may also be noted that undertrial Nagendra Reddy, who was lodged in Hindalga prison in connection with five murders, had managed to escape on May 10, 2009 after killing a police constable who was guarding him at Belagavi government hospital. Reddy was a software engineer against whom even the Interpol had sounded a red alert in connection with the murder of a software engineer in the UK where he worked for some time earlier. Andre, Rana efforts in vain, KKR's 4th loss on the trot
ohli changed that piece of statistics majestically, with his next 50 runs coming off just 17 balls. This time he unleashed three maximums and five fours.Moeen had a big impact on the Royal Challengers's innings. At a time when the visiting team were struggling somewhat to push the scoreboard, Moeen walked in and thrashed the Knight Riders's bowlers, whose disciplined effort in the first 10 overs was simply uprooted in the next 10.The Royal Challengers plundered 143 runs in the second half of their innings. The English all-rounder smashed 66 off just 28 balls, garlanding his innings with six over-boundaries and five fours.Moeen's innings did not only improve the Royal Challengers' scoring rate, it somehow managed to wake up Kohli too.To be precise, it was the 16th over of the innings, bowled by Kuldeep Yadav, that brought the visitors tremendously back into the match. The over cost the Knight Riders 27 runs as a ruthless Moeen hit three sixes and two fours. Moeen was out in the last ball of the over, but by then he had done his job.Kohli, who was looking grumpy till the 15th over, was a transformed batsman post the 16th over. He looked confident, was striking the ball better and that meant trouble for the home team.It was Kohli's day. But it could easily have been Rana or Russell's day too. What began like a drizzle, finished with a thunderstorm. And in the end of it all, the Royal Challengers Bangalore defeated the Kolkata Knight Riders by 10 runs. The Royal Challengers picked up their second win in nine matches, the Knight Riders fell to their fourth loss on the trot, but all that is merely academic for the epic that was played at the Eden. Both the teams started their innings on a quite note but changed character later. Both racked up 143 runs in their last 10 overs. It was almost unfair that one team had to win the match.Chasing a 214-run target, the Knight Riders stopped at 203 for five. That after Nitish Rana and Andre Russell threatened to be supermen and pull off an impossible victory.Rana remained unbeaten on 85 off 46 balls, made with the help of nine boundaries and five sixes. Russell powered to 65 off 25 balls. And despite grimacing in pain because of his hurt shoulder, he mustered nine over-boundaries and two fours. Before the Rana and Russell show, there was of course the Virat Kohli masterpiece and Moeen Ali blitzkrieg. The Royal Challengers's innings changed colours from average to extraordinary to end up on 213 for four in 20 overs. Kohli played a magnificent innings of 100 off 58 balls, and Moeen's whirlwind 66 came off just 28 balls. The Knight Riders were snail-ish in their chase. They lost opener Chris Lynn (1) as early as the first over and thereafter, it was more like a crawl rather than the galloping pace that is required to overhaul a 200-plus target. After 10 overs, the Knight Riders's score was 60 for two. There was hope though, for they were just 10 short of what the Royal Challengers had managed at that stage. The home team needed a batsman or two to play like Kohli and Moeen. Rana and Russell stood up to the challenge.Rana was the No.5 batsman, while Russell came in after the fall of Robin Uthappa (9) in the 12th over. The duo pressed on the accelerator and began dealing in sixes and fours. At the end of 15 overs, the Knight Riders were 121 for four. That meant they needed 93 to win off the last 30 balls. Some more lusty shots followed and after 18 overs, the hosts needed 43 off 12 balls.Marcus Stoinis conceded one run off the first three balls of the 19th over, but the next three were hit for sixes by Russell. What's the relationship between snoring and sleep disorders in women?
Notably, snoring is a common warning sign for obstructive sleep apnea which involves the repeated collapse of the upper airway during sleep. The researchers included 1,913 participants for sleep evaluation for the study which revealed that objectively measured snoring was found in 88 per cent of the women (591 of 675), but only 72 per cent reported that they snore (496 of 675). Whereas in men, objective snoring (92.6 per cent) and self-reported snoring (93.1 per cent) were similar. 'We found that although no difference in snoring intensity was found between genders, women tend to under-report the fact that they snore and to underestimate the loudness of their snoring,' said Nimrod Maimon, professor at Soroka University Medical Center in Israel. He also noted, 'women reported snoring less often and described it as milder.' According to the study, women snored as loud as men with 49 per cent of them having severe or very severe snoring (329 of 675). But only 40 per cent of the women rated their snoring as severe (269 of 675). 'The fact that women reported snoring less often and described it as milder may be one of the barriers preventing women from reaching sleep clinics for a sleep study,' Maimon said. As per the researchers, women suffering from sleep apnea were also less likely to report symptoms including daytime fatigue. IBM using AI to create customised, emphatic chatbots
Banks and insurance providers, she explained, were the early adopters of chatbots in the country, helping customers for bill payments, mobile recharges, booking travel, so on and so forth. However, when it comes to making people feel comfortable, AI has a lot to learn, Dasgupta noted. A lot of available systems make building the first chatbot easy, but do not scale-up when you increase the scope of the chatbot or need to build several hundred more, she said. This, she said, is because of two main factors: overt dependence on the manual effort for creating chatbots which makes them both time consuming and brittle, and lack of an end-to-end fall-back plan with continuous learning and improvement. "We at IBM Research are working towards training these applications with data by infusing AI and related technologies to help organisations get business value at a much higher scale," Dasgupta told PTI. The tech giant's IBM Watson Assistant can be trained to represent a company's specific brand voice and values using that firm's customer and business data. "Conversational agents are going to be a primary way people communicate and the AI that powers it needs to be very strong," Dasgupta said. "We work with several enterprise customers to enable their conversation agents to be more usable and affordable," she said. "There are a couple of AI projects we at IBM Research India are doing on conversational AI," Dasgupta said. The technology, she noted, empowers more realistic conversational AI which is able to handle nuances of the user language and that can handle domain and context understanding. The enterprise chatbot evolution in India started with everyone being impressed by the fact that they can have a 24/7 channel of communication with their customers. In addition, they can delight their customers with an instantaneous response to their queries. Further, many are looking at offering more services like register a claim, get a quote and help customers understand their various policies better. "Conversation is the most natural way for humans to interact with an AI system and the predictions are by 2024 this will be double-digit billion markets," said Sachindra Joshi, Manager - Conversational Platforms, IBM Research-India. "Since human conversation is complex, contains forth and back references, is contextual, it poses a very interesting research problem to solve," Joshi told PTI. "We have built chatbots using the research technologies for multiple external and internal clients. They have been running successfully now for 1-2 years," he said. The researchers use deep learning techniques on conversations between end-users and human agents that provide support in traditional call centres. Their analysis helps identify dominant problems or reasons for which end-users contact call centres as well gives insights on how experts agents handle those problems. "These inputs are extremely valuable to build a chatbot. They reduce the manual effort and the initial build time as well as provide concrete ways to continuously improve the chatbot as it is being used," Dasgupta said. "We have focused on continuous learning of conversation agents, scalable bootstrapping from documents and logs and innovative and expressive ways of dialogue design," she said. "As these technologies mature, users of chatbots will see an improved experience with the bot being able to learn from past conversations and get more effective. "This should increase the proportion of successful conversations. Also bot designers will be able to use our tools to create conversation agents faster and make them more effective," she said. Joshi noted that one big challenge for chatbots in India is the support for local languages. Ninety per cent of the new internet users are expected to be non-English speakers in the next few years. Researchers, he said, are trying to work with linguists alongside technologists developing verticalised vernacular models for handling local languages. "We have also developed deep learning techniques that help in creating chatbots in a data-driven manner and have brought down the initial build time of chatbots from several weeks to only a few days," noted Joshi. Researchers said while designing chatbots, it is crucial to keep in mind the affordability of creating chatbots and their usability. Chatbots are only useful when they help a particular business function to improve, they said. Drug-resistant fungi are a threat to modern medicine
The fungal species was first discovered in the ear of a Japanese patient and in the past decade it has spread across five continents. C. auris can cause life-threatening infections if it enters the blood of patients with a weak immune system. All microbes, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites, have the ability to develop resistance to the antimicrobials (antibiotics, antivirals, antifungals, anti-parasitics, etc.) used to treat the diseases they cause. When all the other microbes are suppressed, there are more resources available for the resistant microbes to grow and spread rapidly. Drug resistance is particularly worrying in the case of antifungals because treatment options for fungal infections are more limited than for bacterial infections. C. auris is resistant to the drugs most commonly used to treat fungal infections. So patients are sicker for longer and survival rates are lower. In India, as many as half of those who develop a blood stream infection with C. auris die, but since in many cases they were already critically ill, C. auris is not recorded as the ultimate cause of death. Unlike other fungi that rarely transmit between humans, C. auris can be passed from patient to patient in a hospital. This is because of its unusual ability to last for long periods of time on hospital surfaces, such as bed rails and door handles. The combination of being transmissible, hard to remove from hospital surfaces and difficult to treat, make it capable of causing deadly outbreaks. C. auris is not commonly on clinicians' radar as it poses little threat to humans unless they are vulnerable to infection for some other reason, such as a recent surgery, for example, or a patient whose immune system has already been weakened by infection with HIV/AIDS. The occurrence of C. auris in India varies by hospital. In one hospital in north India, a third of Candida infections were due to C. auris, but in a hospital in the south, this figure was closer to 10%. A broader look across 27 Indian intensive care units found 5.3% of Candida cases were caused by C. auris (compared to 0.04% in the United Kingdom). Although data are limited, studies suggest that C. auris has spread widely across India though the majority of cases have been reported in public sector intensive care units in the north of India. Receiving antimicrobial drugs, whether antibiotic or antifungal, is a risk factor for C. auris infection. Across India, antimicrobials are available over the counter without a prescription, meaning they are used even when they are not needed or the correct treatment regimens are not followed. This overuse increases the rate at which resistance emerges, and is causing these drugs to become ineffective. In hospitals and clinics, antimicrobials are also often used incorrectly as physicians may not have specific training, may perceive they are needed to satisfy paying patients, or may receive money from drug companies to encourage sales. Patients who stay for longer in the hospital are more likely to be infected by C. auris. Invasive interventions, such as the placement of a catheter, provide an opportunity for disease-causing microbes, such as C. auris, to bypass the body's natural defences and can lead to the life-threatening infections, particularly when hospital staff do not have time or training to ensure cleanliness is maintained. Health care cost constraints have led to overcrowding of patients in some hospitals and this facilitates the spread of infections, including those caused by C. auris. Access to clean water and sanitation facilities is essential to maintain hygiene and prevent infections spreading — many healthcare facilities in rural India are unable to provide access to these provisions. As more people crowd into hospitals, whether because of the greater institutionalisation of births, wider available of health insurance that covers hospital stays or just population ageing, the public health threat posed by hospital acquired infections is increasing. These are infections that patients acquire when they are hospitalised. In India, it is estimated that roughly one in 20 patients will acquire an infection while in hospital. And when these infections are drug-resistant, the risk of death and longer hospital stays goes up significantly. There is no doubt that increasing access to essential health services, through interventions such as Ayushman Bharat, saves lives. However, for health services to serve their communities and prevent outbreaks of deadly resistant infections such as C. auris, failures in infection control must be addressed, antimicrobial use reduced and the emergence of C. auris monitored. Gujarat High Court quashes FIR against trader who deposited Rs 1.49 crore worth old notes in 2016
However, all the charges have been quashed and set aside with the court noting that it did not amount to cheating. The court in its order noted that for cheating to be defined, there should be fraudulent or dishonest inducement, which is not the case here. 'Cheating is an essential ingredient for an act to constitute and offence under Section 420,' it said. It was alleged Shah, in conspiracy with Bhaskar Soni, then manager of UCO Bank, St Xavier's Branch, in Ahmedabad, and some other unidentified persons, had deposited old Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 notes in the current account of his firm. The deposits made between November 10 and December 30, 2016, were to an account that had been lying dormant for nearly three-and-a-half years. Thereafter, Soni allegedly made the account operative on November 22, 2016. The HC has, however, not quashed the proceedings against Soni. Shah's lawyer Chetan Pandya said Rs 1.49 crore was deposited in a KYC-compliant dormant account. 'The RBI circular (after demonetisation) had two clauses, including any amount can be deposited in any account, and second, no restriction on operation of any account via non-cash method such as RTGS, NEFT.' The court took note of Pandya's arguments and said 'mere deposit of huge amount in Shah's dormant account cannot be termed as cheating or any offence under the IPC or Prevention of Corruption Act.'
